Overview
Unlike the lush green trekking routes of Everest or Annapurna, Upper Mustang presents a striking landscape of colorful cliffs, deep canyons, eroded rock formations, and barren valleys. The trek follows ancient salt trading routes that once connected Nepal and Tibet, allowing trekkers to experience a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture.
The journey typically begins with a scenic flight or drive to Jomsom before trekking through Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Ghami, Tsarang, and finally reaching the medieval capital of Lo Manthang (3,840 m). Along the way, visitors explore ancient monasteries, prayer wheels, mani walls, chortens, and traditional villages where centuries-old customs remain alive.
Since Upper Mustang lies in a restricted area, trekkers require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and must travel with a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency. The region receives significantly less rainfall than most of Nepal, making it one of the best trekking destinations even during the monsoon months.
