Everest Expedition South Col

64 Days 63 Nights

The Everest Expedition via the South Col Route is the most popular and historic path to the summit of Mount Everest (8,848.86m). The South Col is a high mountain pass located between Mount Everest and Lhotse, the world’s highest and fourth-highest peaks, respectively. Constantly swept by strong winds, the South Col remains relatively free of heavy snow accumulation, making it a strategic and vital location for climbers.

Since the early 1950s—after Tibet was closed to foreign expeditions—most Everest climbs have been organized from Nepal, following the southeast ridge and South Col route instead of the northern approach via Tibet. When mountaineers attempt Everest from this Nepalese side, their final and most crucial camp, known as Camp IV, is typically established at the South Col before making the summit push.

The South Col was first reached on 12 May 1952 by Aubert, Lambert, and Flory during Edouard Wyss-Dunant’s Swiss Mount Everest Expedition, which, though unsuccessful in summiting, paved the way for future climbs. The following year, in 1953, during the legendary expedition that achieved the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, climbers Wilfrid Noyce and Sherpa Annullu were the first members of Sir John Hunt’s British expedition to reach the South Col — marking a pivotal moment in mountaineering history.

Today, the Everest South Col Route remains the most renowned and widely used path to the top of the world, combining historical significance, technical challenge, and unmatched adventure for climbers from around the globe.

Overview

The Everest Expedition via the South Col Route is the most iconic and widely used path to the summit of Mount Everest (8,848.86m). The South Col is a high mountain pass located between Mount Everest and Lhotse, the world’s highest and fourth-highest peaks, respectively. This exposed pass is often swept by powerful winds, which prevent heavy snow accumulation and make it a strategic location for high-altitude camps.

Since 1950, when Tibet was closed to foreign climbers, the Nepal side of Everest has become the primary route for expeditions. Most teams now approach the mountain through the southeast ridge via the South Col, rather than the traditional North Col route in Tibet. During these expeditions, the final high camp—Camp IV—is established on the South Col, serving as the critical launching point for the final summit push.

This route not only holds deep historical significance but also represents the most successful and practical path to the top of the world, making it the preferred choice for mountaineers from around the globe seeking to stand on the world’s highest peak.
